Terms of Service
These terms are the agreement between you and ScanIfLost. We've kept them in plain English — nothing here takes away the rights you have as a consumer under UK law.
Last updated: 16 August 2026
1. Who you're dealing with
ScanIfLost is run by ScanIfLost, a sole trader in the United Kingdom.
Post: ScanIfLost (MH Web), WeWork, 29 John Dalton St, M2 6FW
Email: matthew@mhcommerce.com
By creating an account you accept these terms. If you don’t accept them, please don’t sign up.
2. What ScanIfLost does — and doesn't do
We give you QR tags. When somebody scans one, they reach a page about your item and can send you a message without seeing your personal details. If you mark an item lost, they see that too.
ScanIfLost is not a tracker and cannot find your things. There is no GPS, no radio and no battery in our tags. Nothing happens unless a human being finds your item and chooses to scan it. We cannot promise that anyone will scan a tag, that a finder will be honest, or that you will get your property back.
3. Your account
- You must be 18 or over to hold an account.
- Give us accurate details and keep your email address current, or you may miss the alert that someone has found your things.
- Keep your password to yourself. You're responsible for what happens under your account.
- Tell us straight away if you think someone else has got into it.
4. What you pay
At signup you choose the six printed labels at £4.50, the qr keyring at £5.50, or both. Those are one-off charges for the physical items. The keyring is limited to one per customer.
Those are introductory prices, held until 30 September. From then on the six printed labels is £9 and the qr keyring is £11.50. What you pay is the price shown at checkout on the day you order — a later change never affects an order already placed.
That is the whole cost. There is no membership and no monthly fee: nothing renews, your card isn’t kept on file for a future charge, and keeping your QR codes working, sending your scan alerts and running the anonymous message relay is included in what you paid.
- You pay once. There is nothing to renew and nothing to cancel.
- Payments are taken by Stripe. We never see your card number.
- We are not VAT registered, so no VAT is charged and prices are the total you pay.
- UK delivery is included in the one-off price.
- If we change our prices it only affects new orders. What you've already bought is paid for.
5. What happens to your tags
There is nothing to cancel and no renewal date to watch. Your QR codes stay live for as long as we run the service, and you can switch an individual tag off yourself from your account — if you give the item away, for instance — which stops scans on it immediately.
We can close an account that breaks the rules in section 7, and section 9 covers what happens if we ever have to stop the service altogether.
Your separate right to a refund in the first 14 days is set out in our Returns & Cancellations policy.
6. Delivery
We post to United Kingdom addresses only. We aim to post within three working days of your order and to get it to you within seven working days, but we can’t control Royal Mail. Your QR codes work from the moment your payment clears, so you can set them up before the post arrives.
If your order hasn’t turned up within 14 days, email us and we’ll replace it.
7. Using ScanIfLost sensibly
You agree not to:
- Put anything unlawful, offensive or misleading in an item name, description or message.
- Put personal details you'd rather keep private into an item description — a finder sees it.
- Use the message relay to harass anyone, or to send marketing.
- Attach tags to anything you don't own, or use the service to track another person.
- Try to break, overload or reverse-engineer the service, or to guess other people's tag links.
We can suspend or close an account that breaks these rules, or that goes unpaid. If we close your account for a reason that isn’t your fault, we’ll refund what you paid for your tags.
8. Messages, finders and handovers
We pass messages between you and a finder. We do not check who a finder is, and we cannot vouch for anything they say. Please use common sense when arranging to get your property back: meet somewhere public, or use a police station or the venue’s lost property desk.
Anything you agree with a finder — a reward, postage costs, where to meet — is a private arrangement between the two of you. We are not part of it, we don’t handle any money, and we can’t enforce it for either of you.
9. Keeping the service running
We work hard to keep ScanIfLost available, but we don’t guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free. We may need to take it down occasionally for maintenance, and we may change how features work.
If we ever have to stop the service altogether, we’ll give you at least 30 days’ notice and refund any order you placed in the 30 days before that notice.
10. Our responsibility to you
Nothing in these terms limits your legal rights as a consumer. We don’t exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law says can’t be excluded — including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 that goods are of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, and that services are carried out with reasonable care and skill.
Beyond that: ScanIfLost is a way for an honest finder to reach you. We are not responsible for the loss of your property itself, for a finder who doesn’t scan the tag or doesn’t return your things, or for what a tag is stuck to. Where we are liable, our liability is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months before the problem arose.
We’re not liable for losses that weren’t reasonably foreseeable when you signed up, or for business losses — this is a consumer service.
11. Your content
The item names, descriptions and messages you write stay yours. You give us permission to store and display them as the service requires — showing your item description to a finder, for instance. We don’t use your content for anything else.
The ScanIfLost name, site and software are ours. Please don’t copy or resell them.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we’ll email you at least 30 days before it takes effect, and you can cancel free of charge if you don’t agree.
13. Complaints and the law that applies
Something wrong? Email matthew@mhcommerce.com and we’ll reply within five working days. We’d always rather fix it than argue about it.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes can be brought in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your own courts.
How we handle your personal data is set out in our Privacy Policy.
